The multi-state agency report “Prescription for Success” identified a nearly 30 million dollar need for services to address addiction issues in TN – the allocation of $6 million will put Tennessee a step closer to this goal. Current funding only treats 1 in 10 of those needing addiction treatment. This funding will address opioid use, prescription drug abuse, NAS births, generational substance abuse, alcoholism, emerging heroin use and the use of synthetics. A copy of the flyer we put together for our conversations with the Governor is attached as well as a template letter that can be used by your members and one that your members can use to ask for their legislator's support. We’d love for you to ask your legislator to support the Governor’s budget proposal for $6 million in State funds to increase treatment for alcohol and drug abuse. This funding initiative will greatly enhance TN addiction provider’s ability to provide more timely addiction assessments and treatment, which will likely address many related issues as well such as the number of children entering state custody and costly incarceration. I am sure your staff are aware of these issues and with skyrocketing overdose rates here in Tennessee. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mary Linden Salter at 615-780-5901, x-18. This issue is as timely and necessary as today’s news. The Washington Post today stated that nationwide, heroin deaths have surpassed gun homicides for the first time. Click here to read the story.
